Business Model Canvas
A one-page visual template describing how an organization creates, delivers, and captures value.
Definition
The Business Model Canvas is a strategic, one-page visual template describing how an organization creates, delivers, and captures value. It maps nine interlocking building blocks: customer segments, value propositions, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partnerships, and cost structure.
Inputs
- Knowledge of the target customer segments and the value the organization intends to deliver to them
- Understanding of the organization's resources, activities, partnerships, and cost/revenue structure
Outputs
- A single-page visual map of the business model, showing how all nine elements connect and reinforce one another
- A shared strategic reference for evaluating new ideas or pivots against the existing or proposed model
When to Use
- Evaluating a new business idea, product line, or venture at a strategic level before detailed planning begins
- Aligning a leadership team or stakeholder group on how the business creates and captures value
- Assessing the ripple effects of a proposed change across the whole business model, not just one function
When Not to Use
- Detailed, operational-level requirements work — the canvas is a strategic tool, not a substitute for requirements documentation
- Initiatives confined to a single, well-understood internal process with no business-model-level implications
