Definition
Non-Functional Requirements (NFR) Analysis is a technique used to identify, define, and validate the quality attributes a solution must meet — beyond what it does. NFRs define how well the solution performs and typically cover performance, security, availability, reliability, usability, scalability, maintainability, and compliance. Missing NFRs are a leading cause of solution failure after delivery.

- Business objectives and stakeholder quality expectations
- Regulatory and compliance standards applicable to the domain
- Input from operations, security, and architecture teams
- Existing SLAs, system performance baselines, and audit requirements
Outputs
- A documented set of NFRs with measurable acceptance criteria for each
- NFR categories mapped to solution components
- Test cases and acceptance criteria for quality assurance
- Inputs to architecture decisions and trade-off analysis
When to Use
- Any system change or new build where quality and compliance are stakeholder expectations
- Regulated environments (banking, healthcare, government) with formal compliance requirements
- Customer-facing applications where performance and usability are critical to adoption
- Integrations and data platforms where reliability and security govern risk
When Not to Use
- Extremely early discovery phases before solution approach is known — defer to when solution direction is clearer
- Simple internal tools with no compliance obligations and low risk
- When NFRs are already fully defined and governed by an existing architecture standard
